A plot of land, a house by the lake, its changing inhabitants. This one plot of land reflects 70 years of German history from Weimar, the Nazis, the war, the Soviet occupation and reconstruction to the fall of the GDR.

Mia, 12, is spending her vacation at a lake in the Black Forest with her parents, who have been separated for years, and their new partners. While the adults try to keep things light, Mia escapes more and more often into the forest, where she meets a mysterious boy. On the morning of her birthday, Mia disappears. The fragile family structure is turned upside down and Mia's new freedom becomes increasingly dangerous.

After an elaborate application process, Empress Elisabeth of Austria hires Countess Irma as her new lady-in-waiting and takes her to her summer residence on Corfu. As the two women become closer there, this soon leads to tensions back in Vienna.
